Modern Victorian Inspirations: Two Armchairs Carved from Carrara Marble

Cinematographer and stylist Anna Pesonen traveled to Carrara, Italy, where she stayed in a marble quarry for two years and worked on carving blocks of marble with local artisans. Pesonen had remained silent about his work and kept what he was working on a secret. But when the time was right, Pesonen took over the Victorian

‘DISCOURSE’ was chosen as an appropriate name for an anthology of chairs carved from Carrara marble. The designs refer to an in-depth conversation process that resembles nesting chairs. Pesonen states that his works are related to the concepts of limitation, disconnection, generation of solidarity, solastalgia, identity and community. He also expresses his hope that these seats will invite dialogue with other individuals, groups or ideologies along with them.

While cutting and shaping the marble, Pesonen becomes an introspective observer and creates two sculptural pieces while creating the desired chair designs. The single chair called 'Introspection Seat 001' offers an experience that purifies the individual from distractions and judgment by allowing him to reflect on himself. Pesonen imagines this chair as a break point where the user can return to his inner world, control himself, and get away from the constant noise, hustle and bustle and worries.

'Dialogue Seat 002' is designed as a two-person chair that encourages social relations and sharing. The two chairs are linked side by side, and neither can function fully without the presence of the other. This layout creates a sense of unity between people looking in different directions, creating a secret shared moment. Pesonen states that these chairs bring people together and encourage them to sit face to face and ask each other to consult, find solutions and get to know each other better.

Pesonen carries his collection with model Ottawa Kwami for the shoot, posing for photos in a marble quarry above the Apuan Alps in northwestern Italy. In this shot, the marble work creates an atmosphere of metaphysical presence and tranquility that envelops the occupants.

Pesonen states that his works are not limited to daily functions but suggest a non-material quality. His works reflect the challenges facing global society and represent influences such as the intensification of divisive politics, misinformation media, and increasing division. He also argues that sculpture is a tool and space for introspection and discourse.
